Pedro Hispano viaduct (renovation – EURO 2004)

Urban Design

Restructuring the Pedro Hispano Viaduct's exit consists in inserting a new lower way, in the direction of the Av. Sidónio Pais Avenue, in order to promote the widening of the highway, thus becoming available with 2 ways. It was also planned the reinforcement of the structure of the main way, in the passage above the metro line, so as to provide a larger viaduct span that will allow the passage of a new, wider street parallel to the Metro line.

The new road was designed to reach a wall height of 5.5m in the most unfavorable point, near the edge of the sidewalk, on the west side. Despite this situation its development made possible to standardize the unevenness of the terrain which allows maintaining relations and access to existing buildings or to the crossing of the existing metro line.
The lane was widened to accommodate two urban traffic routes in the same direction. Therefore, it was necessary to design a structure that would allow to achieve the mentioned result. The construction of a concrete support wall was therefore foreseen and was covered by a stone masonry wall with a composition similar to the previous one..
