Francos road junction

Urban Design

This project was developed within the scope of the new accessibilities to Bessa Stadium, as part of the Euro 2004 program. It consisted in the creation of a node that allowed to organize and flow the traffic between the Paralela Avenue, Boavista Avenue, AIP Avenue and city´s highway, as well as ensure the connection towards the Metro station, in Francos.

It was proposed a roundabout, with the traffic directions of the East-West axis corresponding to the "entrances" and "exits" of the city. The roundabout thus establishes the articulation between the new Paralela Avenue to Boavista Avenue, AEP/Sidónio Pais Avenue and another street developed in a second phase, towards north. The AEP Avenue`s profile was lowered, allowing to cross inferiorly all the roundabout area. The project included the execution of two lower passages and the respective longitudinal walls following the sloping.

The "AEP axis" starts west, near the Francos node and crosses the new roundabout, ending at Sidónio Pais Avenue, near the Hoechst building. It has an extension of approximately 328 m and its geometric characteristics seek to ensure the allowed speed limits.
