In the context of Essenza's nomination as a finalist in the 2021 International Design & Architecture Awards, Design et al magazine interviewed Manuel Ventura, founder and lead architect of Ventura + Partners. The interview touched on his design background, some of V+ projects, and the future of design.

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience, etc).

After completing the architecture course at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, where I first discovered and was influenced by the architecture of Alvaro Siza and all the international and Portuguese modernist architects, I started my career working with the architects Manuel Fernandes de Sá and Francisco Barata Fernandes – my teachers and inescapable names of the Porto school.

In 1994 I created Ventura + Partners, which develops architectural projects, urban planning, technical design, and consultancy. In the last 25 years, we have been developing projects of different scales and in the most diverse architecture segments, such as commercial, corporate, residential, hospitality, industrial, healthcare, mobility, and urban space. Combining a solid experience with ongoing research and innovation, we are committed to pursuing integrated and sustainable solutions through strategic planning. Our mission is to improve people’s lives through architecture, allowing meaningful interactions between them and their surrounding space.

Currently in construction, the Quinta da Vilarinha project consists of four single-family houses. After the construction of the first house, in 2007, the project was optimized, trying to reduce some areas but maintaining the quality and spatiality of this first lot.

The four row houses are characterized by its connection to the outside spaces that surround them, through patios, pools, terraces, and the openings that frame the green landscape.

The ground floor of each house is characterized by the close connection of the main social spaces of the house with the outside areas. The kitchen proves to be a space of great importance, both for its size and for the connection to the dining space. The living room is marked by the large spans facing the rear patio and the unevenness of three steps in relation to the rest of the floor. All houses have a swimming pool, although they are all different, which enhances the use of the exterior spaces and inevitably also ends up marking the interior spatiality of the ground floor.

Three of the houses are already finished, and the completion of the remaining lot is expected to be in the beginning of the second quarter of this year.

Ventura + Partners was awarded at the Global Future Design Awards 2020. The Andresas Viaduct project won first place in the urban design category, sixteen years after its conclusion. The office places Portugal on a list of winners from more than 20 countries, in which the British Foster + Partners stand out.

Integrated within the Euro 2004 program's scope and access to the Bessa Stadium, the construction of the Andresas Viaduct completed the layout of Avenida do Bessa, designed in the 90s by Manuel Ventura. The viaduct was designed based on the concept of a totalizing metallic structure, capable of containing in a single span the distance between the two sides of the VCI.

To shorten the execution time and cause the least impact on the normal functioning of the VCI, the 900-ton steel structure was assembled piece by piece on the adjacent land on the east side and positioned on-site at night, in just two hours. In this context, this assembly methodology was used for the first time in Portugal through a sliding system using two sets of hydraulic cars. This method was proposed and implemented by GEG, an international consulting and engineering design company based in Porto, responsible for the viaduct's structural calculation. The project has become one of the symbols of the city's growth and a landmark of the continuous improvement of accessibility in a developing urban network.

The Global Future Design Awards competition is organized by the architecture portal Architecture Press Release and aims to recognize ideas that redefine architecture by implementing new technologies, materials, programs, and aesthetics, focusing on themes such as globalization and the digital revolution.

Ventura + Partners has just completed the extension to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Pedro Hispano Hospital, in Matosinhos, Portugal. Yesterday we celebrated its inauguration in the company of Marta Temido, Minister of Health, Luísa Salgueiro, mayor of Matosinhos City Council, Taveira Gomes, the Hospital’s board director, Rui Araújo, head of ICU, and everyone who made it happen.

The project was developed in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, creating 11 negative pressure rooms that guarantee the best treatment conditions for patients and greater safety for health professionals simultaneously. Doubling the number of beds of the ICU, this extension not only reinforces, in the short term, the response capacity of the Hospital against the pandemic but also translates, in the long term, into a new attribute for its regular service. The new unit has already allowed the Hospital to resume its regular activity, including surgery, directly impacting the entire community.

Completed in 25 working days, the project fits the surrounding buildings, while also blending art and science. The drawings by Manuela Oliveira, an artist and retired Visual Education teacher, coexist with a phrase by Pedro Hispano, a 17th-century doctor who lends its name to the Hospital — “Medicine aims to conserve the health and to recover the lost health by eliminating the disease.”

The project involved more than 300 people, among architects, designers, engineers, technicians, and other production and construction workers.

Arcádia has consolidated its presence in Porto, through a new space at NorteShopping mall. The prestigious Portuguese brand of luxury handmade chocolates has just opened a brand new coffee box, providing shopkeepers and visitors with the perfect spot to take a break, at any time of the day.

Through a new spatial organization, the concept offers customers a fast service while maintaining the high quality standards and the familiarity that characterize the brand. Seeking the balance between modernity and tradition, new materials and furniture were introduced.

The predominance of beige and polished stainless steel keeps the environment sophisticated and innovative but also functional. On the other hand, the large windows directly above the kiosk allow the natural daylight to enter, making the space look warmer and cozy.

It’s no secret: Europe’s new tech hubs are emerging in unexpected places, far from the capitals. The next will be born in Santa Maria da Feira, in Portugal, as part of the City’s Hall rehabilitation project. The hub will breathe new life into Visionarium, a science center which has been closed since the first half of 2018.

The exterior, with an aesthetic aligned with Europarque – with whom the hub will maintain strong synergies – leaves you guessing what is inside: an avant-garde space with a strong technological component, supported by innovative solutions.

The business center will comprise five offices prepared to receive large companies in the fields of technology, information, communications, and electronics. The first of these companies is already known: ITCenter, a consulting and software company that develops and supplies communication and security solutions for the Service Provider industry.

Each office will have its own image and personality while sharing a common language with the rest of the building. Sharing is, in fact, the foundation of the whole project and, more than allowed, it’s encouraged.

The lounge area – one of the building’s highlights – will serve all companies, promoting the synergies between them. Located in the iconic dome of the former exhibition center, this space will include conference and meeting rooms, as well as recreation and dining areas.

Porto is preparing to welcome a very special hotel, which will breathe new life into a historical land with high archaeological value. Integrated in the “Limit of the Historic Centre of Porto included in the UNESCO World Heritage List”, the hotel will be born in D. Hugo Street, with great views over the Douro River.

The archaeological research found a set of vestiges with high patrimonial value, due to their rarity, chronology and state of conservation. The project not only foresees the preservation of the most important archaeological structures ‒ namely, those of the “castro” period ‒ but it also invests on their valorization, through a solution that can be enjoyed both by the hotel clients and by other type of visitors.

Castro culture is the archaeological term for the material culture of the Iberian Peninsula’s northwestern regions from the end of the Bronze Age until it was incorporated into the Roman culture. “Castros” were fortified settlements situated in strategic places to defend the population.

The project ‒ whose construction is about to start ‒ is characterized by the permanent interconnection between architecture and archeology, which will go hand in hand in all phases of the process.

From the Roman emperors, through Michelangelo to the present day, those looking for the best marble know where to find it: Carrara. Located in north-western Tuscany, Carrara is integrated in a province that extends from the Apuan Alps coast, between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.

Carrara quarries resemble a parallel universe: delicate and severe; natural and industrial; beautiful and bizarre; and immensely white. Here are extracted some of the most valuable stones on the planet, that lend their beauty, refinement and delicacy to the four corners of the world.

In September, Ventura + Partners traveled to Carrara, together with the supplier, Mercado da Pedra, and the client, Desafios Geniais, to choose the marble that would be applied in Essenza’s bathrooms. The blocks were brought from Italy, cut, treated and fully prepared in Portugal by our supplier and the application has already started.

At the beginning of December, at the heart of Paris, SFR Forum des Halles opened as a symbolic place, since it is the 150th store to be conceived according to the “content store” concept.

Representing the fixed-mobile – and content – convergence, the store matches the SFR customers’ news patterns of omnichannel consumption. Transparency is key to the new concept, both in what concerns architecture – the imposing but inviting glass facade reveals the shop’s interior – as well as the store’s functions, that allow the customer to have access to all the information of a certain product, in a simple and reliable way.
